Wildfire Mitigatioin & defensible space

Wildfire mitigation & Defensible Space

What is Wildfire Mitigation & Defensible Space?
Defensible space is an area surrounding your home that prevents a forest fire jumping from the trees to your home.  There are specific ways a defensible zone is created:
  • Removing trees to establish "zone one" objectives. This step reduces fuels closest to your home. By putting space between your home and distance between tree canopies, the chance of crown fires jumping from tree to tree to house are greatly reduced.
  • Pruning lower limbs off your remaining trees, also known as ladder fuel pruning, reduces the chance of a ground fire climbing to the canopy of the trees.

Benefits to having defensible space include:
  • Increased property value.
  • Increased usable property space
  • Increased security of your property
  • Increased wildlife viewing
  • Increased light in and around your home

All too often we associate fire mitigation with cutting down trees ,left and right, and images of a stripped forest. If done properly, nothing could be further from the truth.

Proper fire mitigation results in properly spaced canopies, less fuels, more light reaching the tree canopy and the flora and fauna below.  Furthermore, the process leaves an abundance of water, nutrients and beneficial fungus (mycorrizahae) in the soil for the remaining trees to thrive.  All of this leads to larger, more beautiful trees. And properties with large, well-maintained trees can appraise for 20-30% more than a property with poorly maintained trees!

The Process
Regardless of the method you choose, our process is straight forward and comprehensive.
  1. One of our qualified reps will meet with you to discuss your concerns and goals. Once we have a good understanding we’ll briefly talk you through our process of selecting trees to be removed.
  2. We will methodically move through the property placing ribbons on the trees to be removed. We typically like to leave you a week or two with this so you can take it all in and imagine what things will look like when its all done.
  3. A detailed estimate will be provided by the date the rep promises. The estimate will include the following:
  • All trees & shrubs to be removed will be tagged with surveyors ribbon or spray paint.
  • An estimate that clearly describes the work to done along with specifics that address property access, a satellite image of the property and an outline of the project area.
  • A date when the project can start and when it will be finished. These dates are based on our workload at the time the estimate was sent. Please keep in mind that just one new job can push our schedule back several weeks.

Why choose Ace Tree Care?
We specialize in residential fire mitigation. Working close to your home requires a totally different set of considerations than working out in the middle of the forest. Attention to sidewalks, driveways, irrigation, leach fields, sensitive landscape features, and neighboring properties require a team familiar with operating in these settings. Without special care, tens of thousands of dollars of damage can occur. We take time to prep our crew before they even arrive at your property. Once on site, we perform a detailed walk-through and discussion of the project at hand.
